I am Decidedly Not Tech-Savvy

There are so many things you can do on the internet now. Ive seen applications for making your own music on the internet, computer-based art, blah blah blah. It has created so many opportunites to create and express oneself......
I wish I knew how to use technology.
I cant even figure out how to use Pinterest for crying out loud! I joined like 2 weeks ago and I haven't contributed anything to the site. How do I put the Pinterest badge on my blog? How do I pin things to my boards from other websites? How do I even start a flippin' board??
There have got to be classes for this kind of thing.... Until then however, this is just going to have to go right here:

Some Poems

So sometimes I get inspired and write poems. It doesnt happen very often, and I like to share the ones I do manage to spit out. These are a couple I wrote about 2 years back.
For this first one, I got the inspiration as I was driving one night to a singles ward activity and had this huge full moon out in front of me the whole way to the church. I thought about it the entire night, even when I came home and went to bed. Suddenly, it came to me; I jumped out of bed and, in the dark, composed the following:

Alone, the moon wanders,
A glowing pearl, as twilight melts
Into velvet blackness.
She paints the land
in deep blues and baleful silvers.
Shadows reign beneath her watchful eye --
And lovers sing to her their lovers' woe.

this other poem is actually a set of three smaller "poem-ettes" that I wrote after a nice nighttime hike up to the "Y" with my friend Steve. The view of the valley from up there is pretty spectacular, especially if your taking in the view upside-down.

At night the sky is an ocean
Amid its still and darkened waters the moon drifts -
A lone and weary mariner.

From where I stand I see,
I can see forever.
The city sprawls beneath me --
It is diamonds and amber thrown across a velvet drape.

I could fall into the sky - I am sure it would swallow me whole;
Then I'd become a star, and watch the Earth from sky forevermore.

Mid-semester sentiments

Well, just thought I'd take a little break from homework to share a little about my week, which has been super busy. But, thankfully a lot of the pressure will be off tomorrow when I give my two big presentations and turn in my Museum Collections Management Project Report.--->

In spite of all the assignments and whatnot that I have had to do this week I realized that I really like being busy. Having a lot of worthwhile assignments to do makes me feel like I'm accomplishing somehting, which I am -- I am getting educated! From time to time troubles may pop up and make me blue (like in my previous post, which I apologize for by the way) but I really am content with life.... and also I have banned myself from writing when I'm like that ever again. Also, I am happy because I have friends and family who love me and because Utah has an awesome music scene that allows me access to shows featuring a lot of my favorite bands. Speaking of, Jaimee and I are going to an epic concert this weekend at the Avalon theatre in Sandy. It's Say Anything, Saves the Day, and Motion City Soundtrack, and I am hella excited. Just the other day, Jaimee and I were listening to the new Say Anything album and I got a song from it stuck in my head. I have listened to "Cemetery" at least 3 times a day since Monday. Actually, I'm listening to it right now!
Listen and enjoy!

Life is a Rollercoaster Sometimes..

Or all the time....

All I know is, right now my life feels like the world's biggest.

So, I have been home from the mission now for about three months, I can hardly believe that its been so short a time. It feels like its been forever, and yet I find myself still entangled in post-mission confusion. Sometimes I feel like this isnt my real life, like I dont know what my purpose is. Sometimes I feel like Im drowning in doubt. Some days I just want to go back to the mission. It was safe there, I knew what i had to be doing every minute of every day. And i knew there was a specific beginning and end to every activity, including the mission as a whole. Out here, in "the World", I don't know when things begin and end, everything's all muddled together. I doubt everything; my ability to get a job, my major, my financial situation, my dating life, the support of my friends- sometimes I feel like I dont have any friends at all.

And I dont know whats wrong with me, because other times I feel just the opposite. I wish that all those bad feelings would just go away.

Crap, I feel really whiny right now, but its good to get stuff off your chest, I guess. And I promise I dont feel like this all the time, just every once in a while. I just had to vent.

Possibly the Funniest Thing. Ever.

I would like to give major kudos to my dear friend Jaimee Kendall today. I was chatting with her on facebook chat and she sent me a link to this blog called "Hyperbole and a Half", telling me it was one of the funniest things she had ever encountered. Piqued curiosity mixed with friendship-based opinion-trust, I clicked the link and...

My life changed forever.

I have never laughed for such a long time before (or rather, so.... seguidamente (man, I wish there were an english equivalent to that word)) the posts are so _______. (insert awesome adjective here (there are too many that apply for me to choose one.)) She also does Microsoft Paint pictures that make me really envious, I want those MS Paint skills!!

If you havent checked it out before, you really need to have a look at this blog...

I'm Pretty Lame at Writing Right Now

So I was looking at these note posts I put up on facebook a couple years ago and it made me really excited to write again, which is probably a good thing, since technically if you have a blog you should write in it/ I'm going back to school and I need to practice because writing is a big part of college life. (I don't know if it's just me but I feel like after having learned spanish, my english grammar has gone downhill... should there be more commas, are there any run-on sentences? I'm not sure anymore; if anyone cares to comment, feel free to take a virtual red pen and make all necesary corrections. I won't be mad.)
So my mom just sauntered in and is now sitting on the couch close to where I am writing.... I hope she doesn't see that I am writing about her/ isn't offended by the word "saunter". My mom is very glad that I am home from the mission, it seems and therefore doesnt want me out of her sight until the last possible second; which, in a way, I can understand. I'm one of her younger children, in a few tears, she may just be an empty-nester and I heard that that can be a rough adjustment. So, she comes to my room alot to ask me stuff, wants to play yahtzee; and now is seated not too far away, listening to the sound of the keys typing, or thinking about what to make for dinner, maybe wondering when and to whom I will be married....or something to that effect.
I hope I dont sound ungrateful, I love my mom and I'm extremely grateful for everything she has done for me. Shes done more than I can imagine, I'm sure... which erminds me of a time when I was in the MTC (Missionary Training Center) and my zone president got my district together and told us to describe our mothers to him. As we reflected on thier quirks and stories about how they met our dads, I believe that a realization of the sacrifices they make for us began to dawn on us collectively. It became very emotional very fast. Halfway through my turn I was a blubbering mess and president decided to move on to the next missionary.
Have you ever thought about what your mother has done for you? Have you ever tried to imagine the sacrifices shes made so thet you can be happy and never want? In the past, my mom has gone without buying clothes for herself (for years sometimes) so we could get new ones at the beginning of every schoolyear. I actually remember seeing her in pants that had big holes in them and battered old shoes, but never put two and two together until later. Just think about all she had to go through: the terrible twos, helping with homework, dealing with the melodrama of surly teenagers. Shes had it rough. Why dont you go thank her? Tell her shes wonderful, shes beautiful, that you love her?
Thats an excellent suggestion, I think I will.

The last days of the mission

well im back finally from my year-and-a-half long mission among the chilean people. It was an experiance that words cannot even begin to describe, something that changed my life for good and helped me to progress as a person like i had never been able to before.

On his occasion i wanted to describe a little about the last few days of my mission, and my coming to grips with the fact that it actually was over.

First of all, going to the mission office the last time with my hija (greenie) was fun, as going to the office usually is, the only pain was draggin my two large suitcases with us. I told Hna. Monge that the best way to ttravel with luggage is on the micro (small bus) because its funer. We got to the office, i dropped off my luggage and me and my comp made our way over to president's house. I had my interview with President Gillespie in the which he asked me about my plansfor the future, gave me some advice and dating tips, and then asked me how the mission had changed me, or rather, how i had become a better person because of the mission. Really, I would ask myself how it had not helped me.

the mission has helped me in so many ways, apart from having become more responsable and organized, and learning to work with a schelule and to plan and set goals- apart from meetong and seeing the points of view of so many diverse and wonderful people and really beginning to see the complexity and,at the same time, simplicity of nations-apart from all thast, it has helped me to find nourish and strengthen my convictions and faith in my Savior Jesus Christ; and Im talking real faith- the thing that makes you walk the walk instead of just talking the talk. The patterns i have established during my mission are a foundation on whcih i can keep edifying myself until I reach heaven. For that, I am eternally and deeply grateful to my Heavenly Father for the chance He gave me to serve him for this year and a half. It may not have been a long time (though for some it would seem that way) but it has truly been a formative and quintasential period in my life up to this point.

i wish i had been able to sum it up as well for my mission President, but I think he got the gist of it.

Afterward, I had to wait for Hna. Rivas (the other sister missionary returning home with me) to have her interview with President, during the which time i had some breakfast with Hermana Gillespie. Then Hna. Rivas and I went to read and answer our last emails of the mission... that was a heartwrenching experience for me... i felt like there was a hole opening up in me. Then we went to weigh our luggage, moved some things around, and Hna. Rivas had to take and english test. I suppose it went well for her... i wasnt too sure because i took a nap on Presidents deep and incredibly comfy couches.

When all the returning missionaries got to the house, we began the "closing ceremonies", if you will. It consisted of a dinner, then a testimony meeting. Each and every missionary had the opportuniy to stand and say something about how they felt/what they had learned from the mission. Personally i couldnt stop bawling, to see so much change in people's live, its awe-inspiring. Somehting that Hna. Rivas said taught me a lot about the influence a missionary has without knowing it:

In Belloto 2, the Hna.s had an old man named Jorge Luis as an investgator. They shared with him and he lied what they taught but never really kept his commitments. One day we went to his house (we were in a trio at that time) and we found him watering outside. He told us that he wasnt very interested in listening anymore. (heres the interesting part... but also the part i dont remember) Hna Rivas was about to accept that he didnt want to listen anymore, but turns out that I piped up and insisted that he let us talk to him for a few minutes, saying that the message we had was of utmost importance. Well, he let us in and we talked to him about prayer, i think. He had never prayed. That was the only time I had the opportunity to teach Jorge Luis, but I heard that he got baptized and is currently active in the church, and that he has a beautiful testimony.

You never know what kind of infulence you will have on the people around you.

Possible parting is such semi-sweet sorrow...

In case those of you my avid readers didnt know, tomorrow I will be entering the MTC, the official start of my 18-month mission in Vina del Mar, Chile. I dont know whether or not I will be able to procure much internet time while I'm there, so this blog might be on hiatus for a while.... unless I can find some way to send my thoughts to a reliable friend to be blogged by proxy..... (Reyna...?)
Anyway, thanks for reading waht I had to say, though my life is pretty boring; and, until next we meet, God be with you. :D

Suprise! It's Christmas!

This morning I was awakened by my mother excitedly shouting, "Wake up, Katie! Santa was here!" My family had thrown Jack and me a SUPRISE EARLY CHRISTMAS, since we won't be home for the real Christmas (we report to the MTC on Dec. 17th) so the morning was spent by my family watching the two missionaries-to-be opening gifts. It was really nice, we got a lot of things that will be useful on the mish.... and my mom got Jack and me tickets to go see Manheim Steamroller this Saturday after our endowment. Yay! All-in-all a successful, though unusual, Christmas.
In other news, I had to speak in two wards this morning; My home ward and singles ward. I made a bit of a fool of myself in home ward, but I think it was a success in general.

Midnight Turkey Lovin'

It is currently 11:00pm, and what am I up to? Why, roasting a turkey, of course! My dad is having a thanksgiving-type luncheon at his job tomorrow and he is supposed to bring the turkey, so at 9:00pm he asked me to start roasting a 25 lb. turkey. According to the instructions that came with the bird, it will be done at 2:00 in the morning. Woo-hoo.

Twilight

I discovered one of my most favorite book series earlier this year; a book about true love overcoming the most impossible-seeming of obstascles, and that we can become better than we are, if we really want to..... yep, you guessed it, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. It was the sort of book I went into a "reading coma" for; my roomie Sarabeth told me herself that it was 'making me anti-social'. After finishing the first book, I was fully entranced, and I couldn't stop thinking about it even to concentrate on my schoolwork -- would everything turn out alright? would edward lose control and kill bella? why didnt he just turn her into a vampire already? I read every book in the series (which was only the three, at that time) within a week. I was at the release of Breaking Dawn, which I finished in one day. I have been to Meyer's website and read every single outtake and draft there was. It is safe to say that I am obsessed with Twilight. I also have an excellent memory for things I have read, so I remember every detail from every book in the Twilight series.

I went and saw the Twilight movie last night.

I had already had low expectations of it from trailers and movie updates I had seen on the internet... actually, I had originally intended to boycott this movie because of the things I had seen wrong from these previews, but I ended up going with some friends to see the midnight premiere, expecting dissappointment but hoping for magic.
But, not only was I dissappointed at this movie, I was outraged! I want to throw flaming daggers at the director and punch the writers in the kidney! The camera work was sporadic and nonsensical, like an 8 year old boy with a.d.d. The script was crap, and the actors? Kristen Stewart spent half the time with this stupid look on her face and delivered her lines like a broomstick. Robert Pattinson was okay as Edward (he actually exceeded my expectations) but it still seemed like sometimes he forgot his lines right before he begins to say them.
I could go on, but that is probably unnecessary, I'm sure I've made my sentiments clear. I give Twilight about twenty thousand thmbs so far down they are pretty much molten magma.

Welcome to Firehouse!

Working at Firehouse Subs has been one of the more interesting experiences of my life. Mostly because I've recently realized it is one of my most favorite jobs thast I have ever had. I haven't got anything bad to say about any of it; the hours are flexible, they guys (and one other girl) that I work with are nice and friendly. My manager Rolando is benevolent, and is a real help whenever I make a mistake (which is often enough). The people who eat there (for the most part, anyway) are patient and amiable, especially the "regulars".
Then there is the food. I love sandwiches, and firehouse makes a dang good sandwich. My personal favorite is the Steamer, which consists of pastrami, corned beef brisket, and provolone steamed with italian dressing. It usually comes with just mayo and spicy mustard, but I like to throw a little vegitation on there: lettuce, tomato, and black olives -- YUM!

A Night at the Theatre!

Katie A. got tickets to see Phantom of the Opera for her birthday, which is great cause this was the last week it was playing at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. She immediately asked me to go with her, and I enthusiastically (to say the least) accepted.
It was so fun! We dressed up (you have to when you go to the theatre) and I almost bought a pair of opera glasses, but they were 40 bucks. Maybe I'll ask for a pair next Christmas...
The show was fantastic, (though they could have picked a slightly better singer to be Christine Daae...) Christine was delicate-looking, Raoul was super handsome, and the Phantom was uber-creepy and totally ruthless. There were really cool special effects and great costumes. I laughed, I cried (not really), I went "ooh" and "aah". It was great!
Also fun that happened yesterday: the missionaries invaded firehouse while I was working. It was great to have them there, and it seemed everyone was happier while they were there, even my coworker matt noticed. I think it was the spirit the missionaries brought.

I'm glad; they've called me on a mission!

It's funny, how much excitement can be caused by one piece of mail.
The first time I got this jumpy over correspondence was when I finally got my acceptance letter to BYU. But this letter is something else altogether. My Mission Call -- yes, soon I will be known as Sister Kelly to the good people of.... well, I don't know yet. I will finally be solving the perpetual mystery of where God sees fit to have me work tonight; the end of 'Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego'. I can't fully describe how excited I am right now.

Falling for Fall

Autumn has well established itself, but, unfortunately, I am unable to experience some of the highlights of the season because I'm stuck in Florida, where things are pretty uniform-looking all year 'round. What makes this wrose is that I know my good friend and former roomie Reyna is experiencing an actual autumn and I'm not there to enjoy it with her. I'm quite put out by the whole thing; so, to console myself, I am compiling a list of all my favorite things about the season.
  1. The Weather

Florida's summers are great, and I love the beach; but it is HOT here! And humid, too. The fall brings milder weather, and it gets cool and crisp outside. The clarity and briskness make walking outside in the morning invigorating! These days I drive with the windows down, and even the smallest breeze puts a smile on my face.

2. Fall Leaves

As the weather turns, so too do the leaves. This is probably the thing I miss most about fall in Utah. I remember, my first fall at BYU, I collected fallen leaves from all over the campus -- I couldn't help myself, they are so beatuiful. And the COLORS -- there were some that I didn't even know a leaf could be! Apart from being pretty to look at, they are also ridiculously fun to walk through/jump in, as illustrated by this little drawing I did.

3. Pumpkins

I have a weird, and possibly unhealthy, obsession with pumpkins. And this is the time of year when lots of things are pumpkin-flavored or pumkin-oriented. There's pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin hot chocolate, pumpkin pie, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin chocolate-chip cookies, pumpkin pancakes at IHOP, and also pumpkin carving, pumpkin painting, and pumpkin smashing :). Also, just to be impish, I like to take the pumpkin guts out of a pumpkin I'm carving and throw them at people. This year I carved a pumpkin with some friends and had it entered into a contest. It won, and we got free tickets to howl-o-scream at busch gardens. So, boo-yah!

4. FOOBALL!

Fall is prime-time for football, one of my favorite sports. I like to watch it, and I love to play. As a matter of fact, this weekend we are having a powder-puff football game, and I am stoked!

5. The Fall Holidays

Though it's already passed, I've got to give a shout-out to Halloween. It's a holiday that calls for two things I like a lot: candy, and dressing up in costumes. I love dressing up for halloween, and every year I get so many good ideas for costumes that I have a hard time deciding what to be. This year I was Indiana Jones, because he is and anthropologist, and so am I. Well, I'm an anthropology major... but still..... Also good, and coming up soon, is Thanksgiving. I love food and cooking, and this holiday has to do with both (I make a mean turkey). But most importantly, this is the time of year for people to remember and really do honor to the blessings they have in this life. It also kicks off the Christmas season for my family. Besides that, the next day is Black Friday, which is both fun and exhausting for me, my mother, and my sisters.

So, Autumn, Fall, whatever you call it. It's an awesome season and I suggest that everybody make the most of it....

Ain't Nothin' But a Hootenanny!

So, I've finally done it. I've gone off the deep end and started a blog. What was I thinking?! I don't know if my life is even interesting enough to be catalogued like this...
J/k. I know, as well as many others, that I'm definately insane enough to make for good reading; if even only for my writing rather than the subject matter :D

I took a trip to Tallahassee this weekend with some friends from singles' ward, going to a Hootenanny. It was way fun, and I love car trips anyway. Even if it is only a four-hour drive. "What, in the name of Hanna Montana, is a Hootenanny?!", you might ask. Why, it is only the height of redneck/country bumpkin revelry! Set in a series of adjacent fencded pastures, there was barbeque, boiled peanuts, an enormous bonfire, and square dancing. Yes, you read right, square dancing. There were even demonstrations of whip-cracking (which I got the hang of pretty quickly, if I do say so myself) and roping (which I sucked at). After the square dancing was over, the local "DJ" (I use this term lightly) attempted to hold down the ones and twos, but he wasnt very successful, and he had some power problems. Eventually, my boy Big Mic had to help him out. I danced for a little while, but my dancey moods are few, and short when they do exist, so I ended up playing frisbee with some people farther out in the field before long. We (the girls) stayed the night with a nice family of Katie A.'s acquaintence, who had a large and beautiful home closer to the city. But, unfortunately, the girls didn't get a whole lot of sleep that night due to the combined bad choices of: a) going to bed late b) talking long after getting into bed c) sleeping all three of us in the same bed, and d) watching 'The Messengers" just beforehand.
I know, we're dumb.
So, we left Tally this morning in an effort to make it back to Tampa in time for T3's block, but we got there during sunday school. At least we made it for part of the meetings... though sitting in Gospel doctrine in jeans was a little awkward.

This post is dedicated to my fellow road-trippers: Matt, Brian, Katie A, and Carolyn; with whom I grew much closer as friends, due to happenings and conversations that were not allowed to leave Brian's car.
So, until next time...
